According to reports, James Tate was handed a finished copy of his 17th collection of poems, Dome of the Hidden Pavilion, a few weeks before he died last month. He was 71, and he left behind a body of work full of the matter-of-fact, surreal, small-town scenes that morphed into curious dreams, a percolating humor that never quite hid the darkness beneath.
