It’s beneficial that “In the Land of Armadillos” by Helen Maryles Shankman is a collection of interwoven short stories rather than a novel. The stories are so gently but matter-of-factly horrific that the reader needs great gulps of air, time and space to recover from each implacable tale of Nazi atrocities.
