Duke’s office of student conduct opened an investigation into claims against former men’s basketball player Rasheed Sulaimon last year and closed it when the claims could not be substantiated, Bob Ekstrand, Sulaimon’s lawyer, confirmed Thursday night. Ekstrand also confirmed that Sulaimon is not currently under investigation by the office of student conduct, as Sports Illustrated first reported Thursday. Sulaimon was dismissed from the team in January for what head coach Mike Krzyzewski called, in a news release, a failure, “to consistently live up to the standards required to be a member of our program.” But speculation around the reasoning for his dismissal grew exponentially Monday when the Duke student newspaper, The Chronicle, published a story, relying on anonymous sources, reporting two separate allegations of sexual assault were made publicly against Sulaimon during the 2013-14 school year during two off-campus retreats. The Chronicle also published anonymous comments from a “former affiliate” of the Duke basketball program alleging that “nothing happened” after Krzyzewski and other men’s basketball employees learned of the assault allegations. Duke athletic director Kevin White disputed that claim in a statement Tuesday, saying that, “Any allegation of student misconduct that is brought to the attention of our staff and coaches is immediately referred to the Office of Student Conduct in Student Affairs, which has responsibility for upholding the Duke code of conduct … Those procedures have been, and continue to be, followed by coach Mike Krzyzewski and all members of the men’s basketball program.Read more on NewsOK.com
