It started with a simple act of kindness about five years ago. Katie Wallace, a parent volunteer at Portland’s East End Community School, started bringing in extra snacks when she saw that a few kindergartners didn’t have anything to eat at snack time, while others ate around them. That snowballed into a food pantry at the school, then Portland designer and fellow Munjoy Hill neighbor Angela Adams came calling. “I thought she just wanted to hear about it or write a check,” said Wallace.
