According to The Hollywood Reporter "Luther" creator Neil Cross is set to write the screenplay for the "Escape From New York" remake from 20th Century Fox. The original 1981 film was directed by John Carpenter ("Halloween", "The Thing") and starred Kurt Russell ("The Hateful Eight"). Carpenter is creatively involved and is exec producing.The site also reports that the studio is aiming high with the remake, hoping to relaunch the property as it did with its "Planet of the Apes" movie series, which became a critical and commercial hit.In 1981's film, Russell plays ex-Special Forces soldier Snake Plissken, who is tasked by Police commissioner Hauk on a suicide mission to rescue the President of the United States from a post-apocalyptic New York, which has become a maximum security prison penitentiary.
