For our annual holiday movie preview, we asked Peter L. Stein, Frameline programmer and former executive director of the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival, to write a piece on one of the most anticipated movies, “Into the Woods.” Live-action musicals are very hard to pull off anyway, and only three of Sondheim’s Broadway scores have even been attempted by Hollywood, with very mixed results. [...] with that track record, I’ve been very eager to hear how, after nearly three decades, the creative team behind 'Into the Woods’ approached adapting the extremely popular show for Disney. Sondheim’s marvelous collaborator, playwright and screenwriter James Lapine, gave me a lot of insight, which I’m happy to share.
