Quite a few people have noticed that the modern world sometimes generates a sense of anomie, or ennui, or purposelessness.
An insistent line of philosophical thought traces this problem to the modern world's supposed neglect of beauty. Whereas the ancient pagans saw the world as filled with spiritual agencies that gave the natural world a unique splendor, and Christians saw the world as a theophany, a revelation of God's beauty, modern persons are informed that beauty is merely a subjective feeling of pleasure, an accidental by-product of evolution by natural selection, which tells us that the real meaning of life is to reproduce and that our drive for beauty is just a sublimation of eros.
The winner of the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize isn't Pope Francis or German Chancellor Angela Merkel or any of the other high-profile objects of speculation. On Friday, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the prestigious prize to the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet, a civic group, "for its decisive contribution to the building of a pluralistic democracy in Tunisia in the wake of the Jasmine Revolution of 2011." The Quartet formed in 2013, in the chaos unleashed during the Arab Spring, and the Nobel committee gave the prize to the group rather than its four main member organizations — the Tunisian General Labor Union; the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade, and Handicrafts; the Tunisian Human Rights League; and the Tunisian Order of Lawyers — because they "represent different sectors and values in Tunisian society" and thus could "advance peaceful democratic development in Tunisia with great moral authority."
The Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet didn't turn Tunisia into a peaceful oasis, the Nobel committee noted: The country still "faces significant political, economic, and security challenges." But the Norwegians said awarding the group the Nobel Peace Prize would serve as "an inspiration to all those who seek to promote peace and democracy in the Middle East, North Africa, and the rest of the world" and, more directly, "as an encouragement to the Tunisian people, who despite major challenges have laid the groundwork for a national fraternity which the committee hopes will serve as an example to be followed by other countries."
I have a modest proposal: Let's nationalize Facebook.
Just have the U. S. government take controlling ownership of the company. We've done it before, sometimes in the case of emergencies and wars, but also in the case of natural monopolies. That's an instance where the natural costs to enter a market are really high, but operating costs for a business once it's entered the market are low, so there are natural barriers to competition.
Humans are terrible at getting enough sleep. We generally want it, enjoy it, and recognize its value. Heck, we need it, even if we don't entirely understand it. And yet, healthy sleep habits escape us.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which calls insufficient sleep a public health problem, recommends adults get seven to eight hours of shuteye each night.
