The Musical, as the title implies, attempts to relate the entire history of the Detroit-based, independent record label, from its founding in 1959 to its acquisition by a corporate conglomerate in the late '80s. The Musical is bursting with music (the program lists 60 songs) and a plot that fails to compel and ends up being rather clumsily (and cheesily) told. A hit on Broadway since it opened in April of last year, "Motown" is a definite crowd pleaser. [...] the Broadway touring production of the show now at the Orpheum Theatre as part of the SHN season is about as appealing and slickly performed as it could be. In the real world, that's momentous, but on stage, it's nothing we haven't seen in other jukebox musicals like Jersey Boys or Beautiful: Any list of this show's musical highlights, of which there are many, has to start with young Reed L.
