New Bird Flu Strain Causes Fifth Death In China

The death toll had risen to over 280 as rescuers continued to sift through the wreckage of one of India's deadliest train derailments in decades.

NEW DELHI — Rescuers waded through piles of debris and wreckage to pull out bodies and free people after two passenger trains derailed Friday night in India, killing more than 230 people and leaving hundreds of others trapped inside more than a dozen mangled rail cars, in one of the country’s deadliest train crashes in decades. The accident, which happened about 220 kilometers (137 miles) southwest of Kolkata, led to a chaotic scene as rescuers climbed atop the wrecked trains to break open doors and windows using cutting torches to free survivors. The climber in distress was in Mount Everest's "death zone," an area towards the top of the mountain with low oxygen.       

Prosecutors said in a statement officials found the remains − belonging to both males and females − in a gorge on the outskirts of Guadalajara.       

Authorities found 45 bags of human remains in Mexico some that appear to match characteristics of eight young people reported missing in May 2023.
