Slow-growing in dry, gravelly soil in the south, the Maguey plant is extremely drought tolerant. With its thick, coarse leaves, prickly thorns and sharp spikes, the Maguey needs full sun and well-drained or sandy soil to thrive. However, over the course of many years, as the Maguey develops, it appears to be useless, insignificant and even inadequate.
