News Of The Day From Across The Globe, April 21

Fighting between government troops and ethnic rebels in Burma's northeastern state of Kachin has killed at least 22 people this month, state-run media reported Sunday. The clashes took place despite efforts by the government to forge a nationwide cease-fire agreement with all armed ethnic groups. At least 42 people were killed Sunday in southern Pakistan after a bus slammed into a tractor-trailer in one of the worst traffic accidents in the country in years, officials said. The wreck took place on a busy highway in the Sukkur district of southern Sindh province, when the bus collided head-on with a truck traveling in the opposite direction, police said. 5 Controversial shrine: A Japanese Cabinet minister on Sunday visited a Tokyo shrine that honors the dead including war criminals, a gesture that has repeatedly caused friction with Japan's neighbors.
