Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ Stands Tall Among New Releases

Last week’s new releases did relatively well at the box office this weekend—they at least made it to the top spots on the charts, which is more than can be said for some of the groups of releases of previous weeks. Of the new releases, Jack the Giant Slayer fared the best at the theaters, making a sum of just over $28 million. Given its lukewarm reception, this is certainly a respectable showing.

Once again, we have a week offering an interesting variety of films—an epic reimagining of a classic tale, a raunchy, drunken comedy, and a horror film sequel. Opening today is another film putting a darker spin on an old tale—Jack the Giant Slayer. In this reimagined fable, an unwitting farm boy reignites an ancient war with a fearsome race of giants, and must fight to defend his kingdom from the eldritch threat.
