AP writers pick 'Argo' for Oscar best picture

Surprises and snubs on nominations day held the promise of an unpredictable Academy Awards night. But things have settled into the usual predictability, with clear favorites emerging in key categories....

'Argo' producer scours for the next stranger-than-fiction story

Hunched over a desk in his spartan Westwood apartment, David Klawans squints at his computer monitor and knits his brow in concentration. "I'm perusing," he says. His eyes dart between headlines almost indecipherable on a Web page displaying about 800 stamp-sized images of newspapers from 90 different countries.

‘Argo’ and ‘Les Misérables’ Win Top Golden Globes

Golden Globes

Hollywood insiders had a field day on Sunday as the 70th Golden Globes turned into a feast of smart-mouthed humor aimed at two of their favorite subjects: politics and themselves. The night’s big prize, for best motion picture drama, went to “Argo,” a reality-based thriller about the rescue of American diplomats from Iran during its revolution. But the prizes were just half the action, as the room was kept spinning by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, hosts who pulled no punches.

Argo

Acclaimed Iran hostage drama "Argo" took home its first box office win over the weekend, grabbing $12.4 million in ticket sales at U.S. and Canadian theaters.

Early Box Office: Rain on 'Cloud Atlas,' parade

Cloud Atlas

The box office forecast for "Cloud Atlas" is looking quite dreary, according to early estimates. "Atlas," directed by the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer, has a decent shot at topping the crowded pre-Halloween weekend, but the adventure-fantasy, which cost over $100 million, is on track for a chilly $13 million debut in the U.S.

'Taken 2' takes down 'Argo' in close weekend

Argo

Liam Neeson's "Taken 2" has defended its box-office title with a narrow win over Ben Affleck's "Argo." Sunday studio estimates put 20th Century Fox's action sequel "Taken 2" at No. 1 with $22.5 million in its second weekend. "Taken 2" raised its domestic total to $86.8 million.

Box Office Report: 'Sinister' the Surprise Friday Winner Over 'Taken 2,' 'Argo'

Sinister

Kevin James comedy "Here Comes the Boom" is soft; "Atlas Shrugged: Part 2" hasn't yet galvanized conservative moviegoers. Summit Entertainment's microbudgeted horror pic Sinister stole the show at the Friday box office, grossing $7.5 million and beating holdover Taken 2 and Ben Affleck's new political thriller Argo.

Toronto notes: 'Argo' delivers

At this year’s Toronto Film Festival — branded acronymously as TIFF — it’s possible to devour a big chunk of the upcoming movie season in the course of eight crazy days and nights. I’m talking about the prestige stuff, the awards bait, the grown-up menu. Jammed and overlapping, the schedule allows a caffeinated venue-hopper to gulp down The Master, Argo, Cloud Atlas, The Place Beyond the Pines, Silver Linings Playbook, Hyde Park on the Hudson, To the Wonder, Great Expectations… and I’m sure I’m missing a jumble of other titles.
