Modern Warfare 3 Sales Will Never Catch Black Ops - Has Call of Duty Peaked?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

There’s a rather interesting article over on Gamasutra today which points out the inescapable fact that for all its record setting at launch, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will likely never catch Call of Duty: Black Ops in lifetime sales. With only a few months until Black Ops 2, Modern Warfare 3 is still 2.7M copies behind the original game, a gap it will likely not close as both continue to sell copies.

"Call of Duty" has $400 million in sales on day 1

Activision Blizzard's "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" video game racked up more than $400 million in sales on its first day in stores in the United States and the United Kingdom. Activision said in a statement on Friday its biggest holiday title had sold 6.5 million units, which breaks last year's record of 5.6 million units, or $360 million in sales.

Five Things Call of Duty Needs to Stay Relevant

I'm excited for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. I truly am. In fact, in the arbitrary Battlefield 3 vs. Modern Warfare 3 debate, I can sincerely say I currently reside in the Modern Warfare camp. That being said, provided the technology behind Battlefield 3, Call of Duty is finally at risk of losing their dominance in the shooter market. Combined with the over-saturation of the sequels (yearly releases since 2005), Call of Duty is at risk of joining other Activision franchises that were bled dry, such as Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk.
