Long-distance 3D laser camera unveiled by Edinburgh team

A camera able to create 3D images up to one kilometre (0.62 miles) away has been developed by a team in Edinburgh. Physicists at Heriot-Watt University developed a technique which uses lasers to scan almost any object. With extra research, the camera's range could extend to 10km (6.2 miles), the team said.

J.K. Rowling is building two tree houses fit for a wizard. Despite some complaints from neighbors, the City of Edinburgh Council said Thursday it has approved the Harry Potter author's application to create the large tree houses in her garden for her children.

The author of the mega-selling "Harry Potter" series has an agreement with Little, Brown in the United States and Britain to release her first adult novel, the publishers announced Thursday. The title, release date and details about the book, long rumored, were not announced. A neighbor of Rowling's in Edinburgh, author Ian Rankin, tweeted Thursday that he thinks Rowling has written a mystery novel.
