Brooklyn resident wins Miss America crown

A 23-year-old contestant from Brooklyn, N.Y., won the title of Miss America in Las Vegas tonight. Mallory Hagan won the beauty pageant after tap dancing to James Brown’s “Get Up Off of That Thing” and answering a question about whether armed guards belong in grade schools by saying we should not fight violence with violence.

 

Miss D.C. Allyn Rose on her decision to opt for a double mastectomy after Miss America pageant

Allyn Rose’s father first suggested the mastectomy when she was a freshman in college. It was a couple years after her mother had succumbed to breast cancer; genetic testing and a long, sad family history of early deaths indicated that Rose, too, was at a high risk.

A 23-year-old beauty queen from Kenosha, Wis., won the Miss America pageant Saturday in Las Vegas after singing opera and strutting in a white bikini and black beaded evening gown. Laura Kaeppeler also had to answer a question about whether beauty queens should declare their politics.

Miss Virginia Caressa Cameron, a Fredericksburg native, was crowned Miss America at the great annual spectacle in Las Vegas Saturday night. The 22 year-old sang the "Dreamgirls" ballad "Listen," rocked a bright-yellow evening gown, and exhorted kids to get off the couch and play outdoors -- and did so with just enough spunk and charisma to win a $50,000 scholarship over 52 other women.
