The weekend was very kind to last week’s one and only new release, Oblivion. Otherwise, the charts have remained more or less static since last weekend. Oblivion did quite well in the box office, making over $38.1 million; while this is at the bottom end of its predicted range for its opening weekend gross, it’s still a respectable sum, and the film can probably expect similarly impressive numbers in later weeks.

As promising and, surprisingly, somewhat original as the film sounds, critics remain unimpressed (aren’t they always?)—Rotten Tomatoes currently rates it at 59%. While the film is visually stunning, and Cruise offers a respectable performance, some insist that there’s not quite enough substance to the script to tie the whole package together. Still, HSX predicts an opening weekend gross of $38-$44 million, so the film can’t be all bad.

Traffic was sluggish at the multiplex on Friday as a crush of new movies -- including Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher and Judd Apatow's This Is 40 -- competed with one another for the attention of moviegoers already distracted by holiday preparations. Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey beat both new films to stay at No. 1, grossing $10.2 million for an eight-day domestic cume of $123.3 million.

Vanity Fair's October issue features a detailed report of how Cruise and his Scientology friends went about finding him a new wife following his 2004 divorce from Nicole Kidman.

According to Variety, MGM has chosen Nic Pizzolatto to write the screenplay for The Magnificent Seven remake that Tom Cruise is attached to star. It doesn't sound like Pizzolatto will work on the movie right away though since he's writing and producing True Detectives over at HBO. The series is directed by Cary Fukunaga and stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as detectives who are hunting a serial killer in the South.

For Tom Cruise, a quick resolution to his divorce from Katie Holmes looked like “Mission: Impossible” just last week. But the Hollywood action hero appears to have extinguished the tabloid firestorm with an agreement that one source said grants Holmes primary custody of their daughter, Suri, and control of her religious upbringing.
