My First Impression of "Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation"

Tom Cruise and Rebecca Ferguson in "Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation"

I saw a promotional screening of Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation” on Monday, and here’s a quote from my first impression on MWB: “I like a film that gives you more just when you thought you’ve already gotten the best it has to offer. I also like that the stunts look realistic and not CGI-assisted. There are excitement and creativity in these sequences. It’s not the kind of computer generated mass mayhem you see often nowadays in comic book movies.”

Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Oblivion:’ One Release, One Top Spot

Oblivion - MWB

The weekend was very kind to last week’s one and only new release, Oblivion. Otherwise, the charts have remained more or less static since last weekend. Oblivion did quite well in the box office, making over $38.1 million; while this is at the bottom end of its predicted range for its opening weekend gross, it’s still a respectable sum, and the film can probably expect similarly impressive numbers in later weeks.

New in Theaters: ‘Oblivion’

Oblivion - MWB

As promising and, surprisingly, somewhat original as the film sounds, critics remain unimpressed (aren’t they always?)—Rotten Tomatoes currently rates it at 59%. While the film is visually stunning, and Cruise offers a respectable performance, some insist that there’s not quite enough substance to the script to tie the whole package together. Still, HSX predicts an opening weekend gross of $38-$44 million, so the film can’t be all bad.

Holiday Box Office: Tom Cruise's 'Reacher,' Judd Apatow's 'This is 40' No Match For 'Hobbit'

The Hobbit

Traffic was sluggish at the multiplex on Friday as a crush of new movies -- including Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher and Judd Apatow's This Is 40 -- competed with one another for the attention of moviegoers already distracted by holiday preparations. Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey beat both new films to stay at No. 1, grossing $10.2 million for an eight-day domestic cume of $123.3 million.

Books: New and Noteworthy

Here's a look at the new and noteworthy books on sale the week of Nov. 4: Child's most recent Reacher novel – A Wanted Man – entered USA TODAY's Best-Selling Books list at No. 2 on Sept. 20, and next up is Tom Cruise's controversial turn (he's too short!) in Jack Reacher, hitting theaters on Dec. 21.

How Cruise Chooses Wives?

Tom Cruise

If confidentiality agreements mean romance, it sounds like getting to know Tom Cruise is one bouquet of documents after another. Vanity Fair's October issue features a detailed report of how Cruise and his Scientology friends went about finding him a new wife following his 2004 divorce from Nicole Kidman.

Senh: This is crazy, tabloid stuff, but as long as he's making good movies, I don't care what he does in his personal life.

MGM's 'Magnificant Seven' Remake Has a Writer

Tom Cruise

According to Variety, MGM has chosen Nic Pizzolatto to write the screenplay for The Magnificent Seven remake that Tom Cruise is attached to star. It doesn't sound like Pizzolatto will work on the movie right away though since he's writing and producing True Detectives over at HBO. The series is directed by Cary Fukunaga and stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as detectives who are hunting a serial killer in the South.

Tom Cruise divorce agreement gives Katie Holmes primary custody

For Tom Cruise, a quick resolution to his divorce from Katie Holmes looked like “Mission: Impossible” just last week. But the Hollywood action hero appears to have extinguished the tabloid firestorm with an agreement that one source said grants Holmes primary custody of their daughter, Suri, and control of her religious upbringing.

Cruise, Holmes reach settlement in divorce case

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes reached a settlement on Monday, legally sorting out their divorce with the same speed that kicked off their much-scrutinized romance seven years ago.
