E3: The Last of Us

...with Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Electronic Arts and Ubisoft starting things off early with press conferences and showcases galore, we've already seen a lot of gaming goods. Here's a look at some of the games that have already wowed us...

For Apple and Zynga, this E3 was a magical event. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all retreated within the crumbling walls of aging franchises and spin-off sequels. Under attack from mobile and social games, the Big Three console vendors are stumbling through the year 2012. Nintendo had a notably disappointing Wii U showcase and Sony’s Vita lacks the powerful slate of new titles it needs. We may be drifting towards a scenario where Nintendo shrinks to a rump company focusing only on portable gaming – and knocks out Sony’s PS Vita in the process.

Diablo III‘s opening-day sales just further prove that PC gaming is nowhere near dead. Blizzard’s Diablo III just became the fastest selling game in PC history. 3.5 million copies in just 24 hours. Another 1.2 million World of Warcraft gamers also joined through a special promotion, increasing the total number of gamers on day one to 4.6 million.

 

'Harry Potter' author helps conjure 'Wonderbook'

Famed "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling is collaborating with Sony to create a "Book of Spells" for the augmented reality project known as "Wonderbook." Sony unveiled its "Wonderbook" Monday as part of its pre-E3 press conference in Los Angeles. E3 -- the Electronic Entertainment Expo -- is the world's biggest video game trade show and officially gets under way Tuesday.

Tuomas Erikoinen, the man who drew the hit "Angry Birds" app, doesn't really resent his creation. He's just bored with it. He sees the game's grumpy, ball-shaped, wingless birds everywhere he goes, their furrowed brows staring him down. Here in Finland's capital, where "Angry Birds" began, Erikoinen's drawings have been turned into T-shirts, "plushie" stuffed animals and two brands of soft drinks -- Tropic and Paradise.

3.5 million people bought Diablo 3 in the first 24 hours

It's true - the world is big into Diablo 3 . So much so that the game was purchased more than 3.5 million times in its first 24 hours available, making it the "fastest-selling PC game" of all time, according to Blizzard. On top of that 3.5 million, another 1.2 million copies were scooped via the WoW Annual Pass (which included a free copy of D3 ).
