Coast - Wikipedia
The coast, also known as the coastline, shoreline or seashore, is defined as the area where land meets the ocean, [1] or as a line that forms the boundary between the land and the coastline. [2] Shores are influenced by the topography of the surrounding landscape, as well as by water induced erosion, such as waves.
Coast - National Geographic Society
The boundary of a coast, where land meets water, is called the coastline. Waves, tides, and currents help create coastlines. When waves crash onto shore, they wear away at, or erode, the land. But they also leave behind little parts of the sea, such as shells, sand dollars, seaweeds, and hermit crabs.

Coasts | U.S. Geological Survey - USGS.gov
Science Explorer. Coasts. All combined, the United States coastline is almost 100,000 miles long. Coastal areas are home to more than 40% of the population and support critical habitat for wildlife. USGS scientists work to better understand these dynamic ecosystems to help safeguard coastal communities and conserve valuable resources. Time = 00:00.
Coast | Marine Life, Geography & Ecology | Britannica
The coastlines of the world’s continents measure about 312,000 km (193,000 miles). They have undergone shifts in position over geologic time because of substantial changes in the relative levels of land and sea.
