What is a gene?: MedlinePlus Genetics
A gene is the basic physical and functional unit of heredity. Genes are made up of DNA. Some genes act as instructions to make molecules called proteins. However, many genes do not code for proteins. In humans, genes vary in size from a few hundred DNA bases to more than 2 million bases.
Genes - National Geographic Society
Genes are units of hereditary information, which organisms pass down to new generations. Genes contain coded information for the production of proteins that enable cells to function. An organism ’s entire collection of genes is called its genome. The human genome contains somewhere between 20,000 and 25,000 genes.
Gene - Definition and Examples | Biology Dictionary
Definition. A gene is an extremely specific sequence of nucleotide monomers that has the ability to completely or partially control the expression of one or more traits in every type of living organism. Genes are formed from deoxyribonucleic acid ( DNA) and, in the case of some viruses, ribonucleic acid (RNA) polymers.
Genes, proteins, and traits (article) | Khan Academy
The human genome, which is the complete set of genes in a person, contains about 20,000-25,000 genes. These genes are located on 23 pairs of chromosomes within the cell nucleus, and also a small number of genes can be found in the mitochondria, which are located outside the nucleus in the cell.
