Smyrna (/ ˈ s m ɜːr n ə / SMUR-nə; Ancient Greek: Σμύρνη, romanized: Smýrnē, or Σμύρνα, Smýrna) was a Greek city located at a strategic point on the Aegean coast of Anatolia. Due to its advantageous port conditions, its ease of defence, and its good inland connections, Smyrna rose to prominence.

Smyrna sat 35 miles (56 km) north of Ephesus, built near the ruins of an ancient Greek colony destroyed in the 7th century BC. Lysimachus, one of Alexander the Great’s generals, rebuilt Smyrna as a new Hellenistic city in the 3rd century BC. The city was later established as a Roman commercial center with a port on the Aegean Sea.

Smyrna was the wealthiest of Ottoman cities’ located on Turkey’s Aegean coast, it was an elegant, cosmopolitan city, known as the “Pearl of the Orient.” The city had some of the most luxurious department stores, cinemas, and opera houses in the world.
