Susan Lee Sontag ( / ˈsɒntæɡ /; January 16, 1933 – December 28, 2004) was an American writer, critic, and public intellectual. She mostly wrote essays, but also published novels; she published her first major work, the essay " Notes on 'Camp' ", in 1964.

Susan Sontag (born January 16, 1933, New York, New York, U.S.—died December 28, 2004, New York) was an American intellectual and writer best known for her essays on modern culture. Susan Sontag, c. 1990. Sontag (who adopted her stepfather’s name) was reared in Tucson, Arizona, and in Los Angeles.

Susan Sontag was born in New York City on January 16, 1933, grew up in Tucson, Arizona, and attended high school in Los Angeles. She received her B.A. from the College of the University of Chicago and did graduate work in philosophy, literature, and theology at Harvard University and Saint Anne’s College, Oxford.
