CONCORD, New Hampshire — The University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law is still deciding whether to remove name of the nation’s 14th president due to concerns over his ties to slavery. Pierce, the only president to come from New Hampshire, served from 1853 to 1857. He never owned slaves and expressed moral opposition to slavery, but he was concerned with keeping the nation unified and opposed efforts to end slavery. After students raised objections, faculty members voted last month to support removing Pierce from the school’s name. A decision was expected by Aug.
