Two days after announcing the end of her momentous tennis career in an open letter to friends and fans, Li Na entered her farewell news conference with the appearance of somebody who had been crying.
It didn't take long for the two-time Grand Slam champion to shed tears, again, as she explained her decision to retire in the wake of a fourth knee operation.
"I feel this is the best time for me to retire.
Second-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic defeated fifth-seeded Varvara Lepchenko of the United States, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2 on Sunday to win the Korea Open.
Pliskova stormed out to a 4-0 lead in the third set at Olympic Park Tennis Center and held on for the second WTA title of her career in a match that lasted 2 hours, 11 minutes.
Pliskova added the Korea win to her first WTA title she won in Kuala Lumpur last year.
