Dante Sparaco dreamed of playing big-time college football, and his parents were willing to do just about anything to help him achieve his goal.
Sparaco started his career as a quarterback at Glenwood Springs High, where he helped lead the Class 3A Demons to the playoffs as a sophomore. Then he transferred across state to perennial Class 5A heavyweight Cherry Creek for his junior year, where he played tight end and offensive tackle.
For the Schultz brothers, the path to greatness began as young boys on a beat-up mat out in their garage. They’d go there and wrestle with each other throughout childhood, honing their technique, callusing toughness and Cauliflower ear.
That was long before both brothers became Colorado state champions. Ponderosa sophomore Cohl Schultz was the winner of the 220-pound title last season while Mountain Vista senior Trent Schultz walked away the champion at 195.
Now, with the high school wrestling season underway once again, everything the Schultz brothers have done—and everything they aspire to accomplish this season—can again be traced back to that tattered mat in the garage, where both of them formed a bond with the sport, and with each other.
“Winning my title didn’t really feel real until I saw Cohl get his,” Trent Schultz said.
The late, great manager Sparky Anderson once said, “You give us the pitching some of these clubs have and no one could touch us, but God has a way of not arranging that, because it’s not as much fun.”
Rockies fans can certainly relate, though they might not be laughing. When they flock to Coors Field and watch a team stocked with talented young position players they can’t help but wonder, “If we only had some pitching … ”
Jeff Bridich can relate, too.
On Sunday, he’ll arrive at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center outside Washington, D.
The Avalanche’s problems? Slow starts, at the opening of games or periods. Spotty goaltending. Brain-lock mistakes, leading to odd-man rushes, and occasional spells of looking completely lost or disinterested in getting back to help out in the defensive zone. Lack of scoring, especially from those counted on to provide it.
And more — now including injuries.
With 59 games remaining after the Avalanche went 0-4-1 in the homestand that concluded with a 3-0 loss to Dallas, it’s conceivable — not likely, but conceivable — that this team could get it turned around and at least be playing meaningful games down the stretch under first-year coach Jared Bednar. But if the Avalanche’s struggles continue to the new year, these will be the inescapable and actually quite simple conclusions:
— The Avs, with this roster, just aren’t that good.
— See the standings?
