The Toronto Star’s movie critic Peter Howell has gone viral on the Internet, but perhaps not in the way that was intended.
In both an article and a now-deleted tweet about the critically acclaimed film Moonlight and its writer/director Barry Jenkins, Howell writes about Jenkins using the term “coat-switching” in reference to stereotypes.
However, what Jenkins was really saying was code-switching, which Howell detailed in his piece as “deliberately shifting cultural traits and vernacular to suit different circumstances.” The term is commonly used in reference to racial identity.
The article has since added a correction, but not before the Internet had some fun with “coatswitching.”
One Twitter user was on hand to define coat-switching with pop culture.

It’s that time of year again. Grown adults will be out for Halloween in costumes of a questionable nature when it comes to race. Perhaps Chris Hemsworth, who just wrapped filming on Marvel’s "Thor: Ragnarok," can educate some of them on why cultural appropriation is bad.
We know President Obama has impeccable music taste, thanks to the release of his workout and summer playlists. And now we have further insight into his views on the players in the game after an interview on Friday’s “Sway in the Morning” SiriusXM radio show. Obama called in to chat with host Sway Calloway, sharing his thoughts on everything from sports to his wife’s potential political ambitions.
On sports: Obama is behind the Golden State Warriors for the NBA Championships (“just because Durand”), and thinks that “you’d have to put your money on Brady again” when it comes to the NFL this year.
First, indie sci-fi survival sandbox No Man’s Sky was in my view definitely not a mistake, and you can read why I think so here. But second, and of more immediate importance, it seems a troll (or trolls) managed to hack into Hello Games’ backend to launch a bit of Internet drama this morning.
Scary movies are a Halloween-time staple. But what classics have stood the test of time—and which ones have fallen out of favor? Product review site Influenster conducted a nationwide survey to determine America’s favorite horror films, state by state. The takeaway? Hocus Pocus—the beloved 1993 Disney movie starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Bette Midler as zany witches—still holds a special place in America’s heart, taking the top spot in 12 of the 50 states and also winning the popular vote overall.
Runner-up in the scary-movie ranking is The Conjuring from 2013 (California, Arizona, and Illinois were three of the eight states that voted in this paranormal film’s favor), while 2010’s Insidious, a low-budget haunted-house thriller, placed third overall.
