I'll say this for Donald Trump: He's full of surprises.
The GOP nominee has said many horrible things. And given his way with words, even when he tries to say good things, it often comes out as fairly horrendous. And yet, during his third debate with Hillary Clinton, the things he said about abortion were not only relatively cogent, at least for The Donald, but actually followed an excellent blueprint for Republican politicians who want to make the pro-life movement's case.
Now, it's almost certainly true that Trump doesn't actually believe anything he said during the debate, and particularly not about abortion.
If the lewd tape before the second presidential debate didn't finish Donald Trump off, Hillary Clinton's masterful performance in the final debate certainly did. She was in full command-and-control mode — in command of the facts and in control of the situation. She baited him with evidence, reducing him to artlessly sputtering "nasty woman" at the most inappropriate moment, exposing him for the foul and strutting misogynist he is.
But Clinton's inevitable victory on Nov.
"Presidential campaigns are like MRIs for the soul," said David Axelrod, Barack Obama's former chief strategist, during the bruising 2012 campaign. This time around, the vetting of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton has been far more invasive than an MRI — like a colonoscopy, perhaps, or open-heart surgery without anesthesia.
Stephen Colbert began Thursday's Late Show by noting he has a "Trump hangover" from the "third and final debate — if there is a God." In his live post-debate show Wednesday night, Colbert lit into Donald Trump for refusing to say he would accept the results of the Nov. 8 election, and Colbert wasn't done 24 hours later.
