Arapahoe County District Attorney John Kellner, a Republican, has announced his decision to run against Democratic incumbent Phil Weiser for attorney general in this year’s election. The prosecutor who was elected district attorney in 2020 said in a news release Thursday that he wants to make Colorado safer, and wrote in his initial announcement in a Colorado Politics column that “Colorado has fallen victim to an out-of-control crime wave.” He blames state policies and contends that Weiser has “failed to lead when it comes to public safety.” Ahead of this year’s election, Republicans have been attacking state Democratic policies that they attribute to an increase in violent crime. Kellner presides over the 18th Judicial District, which includes Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties, and his current term is set to end in January 2025.
