In conversation with the late, great poet Jack Gilbert, my good friend Scott Silsbe, a young versifier himself at the time, mentioned that he had recently moved from his native Detroit to Gilbert’s own hometown of Pittsburgh. Gilbert wryly replied, “That’s like jumping from one smokestack to another.”
