CHICAGO - The situation did not look great for Dennis Smith Jr. as he walked off the court at halftime Monday night. No points. 0-for-4 shooting and a team-worst minus-15 while he was on the court. With those numbers working against them, the Mavericks had to feel great about being ahead by seven points. But Smith's play in the second half was a perfect example of why NBA games are 48 minutes and that players -- particularly young players -- can't allow any sort of pity party to creep into their thoughts when things aren't all rosy. The second-year point guard came out like a different player and played a major role in the Mavericks' first road win of the season, 103-98 over the Bulls. It took just 16 seconds into the third quarter for Smith to be credited for a block on Chicago rookie Wendell Carter Jr., then race the length of the court for a twisting layup.
