How major US stock market indexes fared on Monday
U. S. stocks closed slightly higher Monday, nudging the Dow Jones industrial average to a record high for the 12th consecutive time.
The tiny gains came after an indecisive day for U. S. stocks that sent indexes wavering between small gains and losses.
Interest rates on short-term Treasury bills were mixed in Monday's auction, with rates on six-month bills holding steady while rates on three-month bills dipped to their lowest level in five weeks.
Separately, the Federal Reserve said Monday that the average yield for one-year Treasury bills, a popular index for making changes in adjustable rate mortgages, edged down to 0.80 percent on Friday, slightly below the 0.83 percent average seen on Feb.
Phone company stocks struggled as bond yields bounced back from a steep decline Friday.
With the price of oil rising, shares in energy companies made gains after a string of recent losses.
The online marketplace for royalty-free images and videos had a weak fourth quarter and its sales guidance disappointed analysts.
The company agreed to pay $1 billion in fines and restitution for concealing a deadly defect in millions of air bags, which led to the largest product recall in U. S. history.
First recall issued relating to Takata's air bags, for the 2000-2001 model year Isuzu Rodeo and the Honda Passport.
Takata says the passenger side air bags contain an improper amount of generant, which produces the gas that makes them inflate.
Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda and General Motors recall nearly 3.4 million older-model vehicles worldwide due to defective Takata air bags.
Takata blames two human errors: A worker who forgot to turn on the switch for a system weeding out defective products and workers who improperly stored parts and exposed them to humidity.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration imposes a record civil penalty of up to $200 million against Takata and requires it to recall all inflators with ammonium nitrate unless it can prove they are safe.
