Registered voters in Newport Township in northeastern Lake County will have a say Wednesday on a proposal to increase taxes for the township road district. The meeting of electors will be held at 6 p.m. at the Wadsworth village hall, 14155 W. Wadsworth Road.
An army of health insurance navigators has had a busy week helping to enroll people around the suburbs in health care plans ahead of a federal deadline Monday for people to sign up for coverage that begin Jan. 1. Although some people vent about the new federal health care law, "I've been shocked by how sweet and patient and grateful people have been," one navigator said.
Geneva High School students earned pointers and praise Tuesday after holding a mock lawsuit trial involving a crash between two teenage classmates who may have been drinking. Since 2008, Jennifer Dunlap has made the trial part of her Business Law Class curriculum, with the project amounting to 50 percent of each student's final grade.
Naperville City Council members came up with a plan for continuing the city's often-discussed downtown mobile food cart program Monday night, and it's a plan almost all of them agree "cuts the mustard." Two carts instead of four will be allowed to set up shop in the downtown -- one outside the central parking facility on Chicago Avenue and another along the Riverwalk -- under $275 permits for which vendors must apply every two years.
Naperville school officials are moving quickly to implement some of the 27 suggestions they received this week from participants in the Future Focus community engagement process. Superintendent Dan Bridges said several initiatives to improve Naperville Unit District 203 already are in the works. "We're a little impatient," Bridges said.
