Maine electricity customers paid $77 million more than they needed to on power from 2012 to 2016, according to a new report from Maine utility regulators. In a report issued last week, the Maine Public Utilities Commission confirmed the findings of a 2016 investigation by the Bangor Daily News, showing that Mainers would have saved at least $77 million by sticking with the state-regulated power price during that time, instead of buying their power from retail sellers called “competitive electricity providers.” The electricity retailers are separate from utilities such as Central Maine Power Co.
