For some reason I've slept on the mystery/crime genre and I started off by watching Gone Girl. Subsequently went on a roll and watched Zodiac and Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Had a lurk on here and Prisoners, Gone Baby Gone and Mystic River were recommended a lot, the former of which was amazing and fit that suspense/dark/crime not-knowing-what-happened sort of feel.
