Cape May-Lewes Ferry canceled for high winds LEWES, Del. (AP) — There's some bad news for Memorial Day weekend travelers in Delaware. The Cape May-Lewes Ferry is closed for the day Saturday because of high winds in the area. Officials announced the cancellation on the ferry website.

Besides Mearns, other dancing contestants include Kim Tandy, an attorney and executive director of the Children's Law Center; Helen Carroll, manager of community relations for Toyota Motor Engineering and Manufacturing North American headquarters; Charlie Pangburn III, senior vice president and general counsel for UC Health; Lynda Jackson, superintendent of Covington Independent Public Schools; Mike Wong, founder and owner of Oriental Wok restaurants; attorney Marcus E. Coleman and Anthony E. "Tony" Chavez, professor at NKU's Salmon P. Chase College of Law. The Children's Law Center got the idea for the dancing fund raiser from Crabtree, who'd taken lessons at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Blue Ash. Besides providing professional partners for the celebrity dancers, the studio is providing 12 free dance lessons to each contestant and will offer additional lessons at a discounted rate, if the celebrities feel the need for more instruction. Along with raising money for a worthwhile cause, she says she hopes to increase awareness of the Children's Law Center and its mission.

All Conn. parks, forests to be open for holiday (AP) — Connecticut park officials say all 107 state parks and 32 state forests will be open for the Memorial Day weekend, the start of the summer season. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said visitors will notice various improvements.

Updated 10:25 am, Saturday, May 25, 2013 KETCHIKAN, Alaska (AP) — Recreational boating accidents claimed 22 lives in Alaska during 2012, resulting in the Last Frontier having the highest fatality rate in the United States. Alaska's fatality rate of 43.9 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational boats compares to the overall national rate of 5.4 last year, according to U.S. Coast Guard statistics published Monday. Alaska's 22 deaths in the 23 recreational boating accidents recorded by the Coast Guard in 2012 were a marked increase from recent years. The Coast Guard's "2012 Recreational Boating Statistics" is the latest installment in an annual series that provides a detailed look the frequency and type of boating accidents nationwide. According to the Coast Guard report's executive summary, the 2012 overall fatality rate of 5.4 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational boats is 12.9 percent lower than the fatality rate of 6.2 seen in 2011. Within 10 minutes or so, the person begins to lose peripheral nerve and muscle strength, making it difficult to perform fine-motor skills such as zipping up a life jacket or activating a visual distress signal. "If people aren't wearing life jackets, they're drowning long before hypothermia becomes a factor," Johnson said, adding that studies have shown that good swimming ability is only a minor factor in cold-water survival rates.
