'So You Think You Can Dance' Renewed: Fox Series Picked Up For A Tenth Season

"So You Think You Can Dance" has been picked up for a tenth season. Fox has officially announced the return of the Emmy-winning dance competition show, with auditions kicking off on Fri., Jan. 18, 2013. “I couldn’t be more proud of the amazing work that Nigel [Lythgoe] and the entire 'So You Think You Can Dance' team has done over the past nine seasons,” Fox's president of Alternative Entertainment Mike Darnell said. “This show is truly one of the most compelling series on television and I can’t wait to bring it back for Season 10.”

The season's second episode of "So You Think You Can Dance" was up from last Thursday's premiere and gave FOX a huge advantage in young viewers and a slim lead overall on Wednesday night.

Melanie Moore easily clinched the grand prize on "So You Think You Can Dance." Viewer votes overwhelmingly awarded the pixie-haired 19-year-old college student from Marietta, Ga., the title of "America's Favorite Dancer" and the $250,000 cash prize. Moore bested fierce runner-up Sasha Mallory, 23, of Bakersfield, Calif., and powerful third-place finisher Marko Germar, 22, of Los Angeles.

Fox carried over its winning ways and ratings gains from the American Idol finale on Wednesday to the season premiere of So You Think You Can Dance on Thursday. The two-hour opener (3.2/10 in 18-49, 9.1 million viewers) was up 7% in 18-49 and 11% in viewers from last summer's premiere. It was the most watched SYTYCD premiere in 4 years and highest rated in 3 years.

Egads, it’s Thursday, which means someone’s going home on “SYTYCD,” waah. Although it’s nice to see Kenny Ortega again, who really has done amazing things for dance in his career, even if now he just looks like a big, stuffy business man pulled from the cast of “Mad Men.” I will give “SYTYCD” props for actually having guest hosts who, with the exception of Ellen Degeneres back in the day, actually know dance and can comment intelligently on what we see. Don’t get me wrong, Ellen was fun, but I’ll take fewer jokes and more pointed commentary any day.
