'Bourne,' 'Campaign' bump Batman from No. 1 spot

The Bourne Legacy

"The Dark Knight Rises" has finally fallen out of first-place at the weekend box office.
Jeremy Renner's action tale "The Bourne Legacy" took over as the No. 1 movie with a $40.3 million debut, according to studio estimates Sunday. Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis' political comedy "The Campaign" opened at No. 2 with $27.4 million.

"The Dark Knight Rises" topped the box office for the third week in a row, making $36.4 million this past weekend. The finale in Christopher Nolan's epic Batman trilogy has now made nearly $355 million domestically alone, according to Sunday estimates from Warner Bros.

AURORA AFTERMATH: ‘Dark Knight Rises’ wins 2nd weekend, but turnout still dampened

“THE DARK KNIGHT RISES” remained atop the box office this weekend — but the Aurora shooting tragedy on the night of the Batman film’s debut apparently continues to affect some of the public willingness to go see it. “The Dark Knight Rises” grossed nearly $64.1-million in its second weekend in North American theaters — a sizable 60-percent drop from its debut weekend, according to estimates reported Sunday by Warner Bros. Final numbers are expected Monday.

'Dark Knight' earns estimated $75 mil

The Dark Knight Rises

After a tragic start to its domestic run, Warner Bros.' "The Dark Knight Rises" is still poised for boffo biz at the domestic box office, with early estimates putting the Batman sequel at $75 million to 80 million for Friday alone... Warner Bros. announced on Friday that it would not report box office figures for "The Dark Knight Rises" over the weekend out of respect for the victims of the shooting in Aurora, Colo., which left 12 people dead after a lone gunman opened fire on the packed theater at a Thursday midnight screening. It was the second Batpic in a row to open under tragic circumstances; Heath Ledger's death in January 2008 came before his Oscar-winning turn as The Joker in that year's July release, "The Dark Knight."

‘THE AVENGERS’ becomes the biggest superhero film of all time

“The Dark Knight Rises” may be on the horizon, but Disney/Marvel’s “The Avengers” can now look at “The Dark Knight” in the rear-view mirror. “The Avengers” grossed $20.3-million this weekend to lift its total domestic take to $552.7-million — rocketing it past Warner Bros./DC’s ”The Dark Knight” ($533.3-million) for third all-time in the record books. The Marvel-superheroes-assembled blockbuster is now the most successful superhero film ever.
