iOS 6.1 released: LTE and iTunes Match boosted

This morning Apple has revealed iOS 6.1 for their most modern mobile device lineup, this download and upgrade available over-the-air for all iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch models currently carrying iOS 6.0. This upgrade includes several updates to the system including, first of all, LTE support for a brand new set of carriers for the iPhone 5 (and perhaps the iPad lineup as well), a full list of which you can find on Apple’s iPhone 5 carrier page. Next you’ll find iTunes Match compatibility with individual song downloads from iCloud – you’ve never had that before, believe it or not!

Google Maps Adds Street View To iPhone/iPad Browsers

Hate the new Maps app that Apple ships with iOS 6? You're not alone. Fortunately it's easy to add Google Maps back onto your iPhone and iPad. However, so far there's been one feature lacking in the browser implementation of Google Maps that was present in the app -- Street View.

Google Pounces on Apple Map Problems

The furor over Apple's faulty mapping software reached the Silicon Valley company's highest echelons Friday, prompting an apology from Chief Executive Tim Cook and opening the way for rival Google to capitalize on the misstep.

Tim Cook on Apple maps: 'Extremely sorry'

iPhone 5

Apple CEO Tim Cook says the company is "extremely sorry" for the frustration its Maps application has caused and it's doing everything it can to make it better. In the meantime, he recommended that people use competing map applications to get around... "While we're improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app," Cook wrote.

Apple’s new iOS 6 system coming today

Even if you’re not planning to upgrade your iPhone to the iPhone 5, that doesn’t mean you have to sit out the smartphone refresh fun. Apple’s going to release the next version of its operating system, iOS 6, to the public Wednesday, which will come with an improved version of Siri, a new mapping app and calling features, such as the ability to set a “do not disturb” period.

Apple's iOS 6 Is Coming This Fall: Maps, Passbook, Siri and More

Apple Maps

Apple just unveiled a bunch of new iPhone and iPad features coming this fall in iOS 6, but no big surprises. The biggest new feature, as expected, is an entirely new Maps experience. Apple has taken over its maps back-end from Google, including a gorgeous 3D "flyover" mode, crowdsourced traffic information, Siri integration and turn-by-turn directions. (Public transit directions, a nice feature of Google Maps, seem to be missing. Perhaps Google will launch its own iOS Maps app now?)
