'Nobody could call the game like he did:' Fans remember Gil Santos

His calls were great, even when the Patriots weren’t so good.That’s how fans outside Patriots Place remembered legendary New England Patriots broadcaster Gil Santos this morning.  "It was amazing listening to him. There will never be another Gil Santos,” said Tom Haverty, 45, of Medfield, as he walked with his son.Santos yesterday on his 80th birthday.

Mom: Preschool's ban of the term 'best friend' is silly

GEORGETOWN — A Massachusetts family is looking for a new preschool for their 4-year-old daughter because her current school has barred use of the term "best friend."Christine Hartwell says her daughter, Julia, appeared sad recently when she came home from the Pentucket Workshop Preschool in Georgetown.The little girl told her mother she was upset because her teacher told her she couldn't call one of her classmates her "best friend."

 

Man with arsenal in home held without bail

HOLYOKE — A Massachusetts man police say had an arsenal of guns, thousands of rounds of ammunition, and bomb-making chemicals in his home has been ruled a danger to society and held without bail.Edward Laboursoliere was held Thursday by a judge who said "these are items that can cause mass harm to people."The 49-year-old Holyoke man was arrested this month after his wife called police.

Fugitive indicted after eluding authorities for 20 years

BOSTON — A fugitive who has eluded authorities for 20 years has been indicted for failing to appear in for his court sentencing in 1997.U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Andrew Lelling's office said Thursday that 51-year-old Luis Alberto Solano-Pimental faces one count of failure to appear in court. He's been in custody since he was arrested in Warwick, Rhode Island in March.Solano-Pimental has been a fugitive since he pleaded guilty to passport fraud in federal court in Boston in 1997 and failed to appear on his scheduled sentencing date.

 

Court rules against state in prison dog policy fight

BOSTON — Massachusetts' highest court says the state's Department of Correction overstepped its authority when it began using dogs to search prison visitors for drugs without giving the public a chance to weigh in.The Supreme Judicial Court ruled Thursday that the department should have followed a regulatory process that allows interested parties an opportunity to present their views.The drug-dog policy has been in place since 2013. The court said it could have a "potentially significant impact" on visitors' experience.

 

Rail system addressing engineers with bad driving records

BOSTON — Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker is taking steps ensure that commuter rail engineers with poor personal driving records aren't putting passengers' safety at risk.The Boston Globe reports the Republican governor notified the Federal Railroad Administration this week that commuter rail officials will now be able access to Registry of Motor Vehicle records in real time and receive alerts when one of their engineers gets a driving violation.
