Black Lives Matter comes to Lincoln Center this weekend, as the New York Film Festival makes a political statement with an unprecedented step: showcasing a documentary on opening night. Directed by Ava DuVernay (“Selma”), “13th” draws a connection between the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery, and one of today’s most talked-about issues: the mass incarceration
The explosion of the enormous floating rig Deepwater Horizon and the ensuing oil spill into the Gulf of Mexico is well known as the worst environmental disaster in U. S. history. A buried truth within that statistic is that 11 workers lost their lives in April 2010, when pressure built up in a pipeline submerged a mile underwater, resulting in a massive blowout and fire.
“Deepwater Horizon” revisits that tragedy, reconstituting it as both a rousing action movie and a somber memorial to the dead.
Magnolia PicturesShin Sang-ok, Kim Jong-il and Choi Eun-hee in “The Lovers and the Despot.”“Why do all of our films have the same ideological plots? There’s nothing new about them. Why are there so many crying scenes?” This complaint about North Korean cinema — articulated in the fascinating documentary “The Lovers and the Despot” — comes from an unusual film critic: Kim Jong Il, who, as the film reports, went to extraordinary lengths to boost the stature of his nation’s cinema.
The lovers (later to become wife and husband) of the title are Choi Eun-hee and Shin Sang-ok, an actress and a filmmaker who made a series of well-regarded films in South Korea, beginning in the 1950s.
Armed with platitudes galore, Disney’s “Queen of Katwe” borrows a worn-out template to tell a remarkable true story. The year is 2007 and 10-year-old Phiona Mutesi (Madina Nalwanga) supports her family by selling maize on the streets of her Uganda slum. But a chance encounter with a missionary introduces her to chess — a game she clearly was born to play — and it could be her ticket out of poverty.
The movie is based on a book (which was based on an ESPN magazine article) by Tim Crothers that tells an irresistible underdog tale.
Three stars. Rated PG-13. 122 minutes.
Style, for Tim Burton, isn’t a substitute for good storytelling, but an essential means of delivering it. And so with “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” — an engagingly oddball adaptation of Ransom Riggs’s 2011 bestseller about youngsters with X-Men-like powers who come under attack by malevolent entities — the opportunities for the “Alice in Wonderland” filmmaker to flex his particular brand of moviemaking muscle are manifold.
In a story involving time travel, scary monsters and a group of quirkily charismatic English orphans blessed (or cursed) with such fantastical gifts as one boy’s ability to control the colony of bees that live in his stomach, Burton is in his element.
