London (AFP) - Stung by a last-minute defeat in the Champions League, Manchester City will attempt to make up ground in the Premier League title race when they host leaders Chelsea on Sunday. A 90th-minute strike by former player Jerome Boateng condemned City to a 1-0 loss at Bayern Munich on Wednesday and left Manuel Pellegrini's side without a victory in three matches.
Incheon (South Korea) (AFP) - China won the first gold medal of the 2014 Asian Games on Saturday when its women shooters -- Olympic champion Guo Wenjun, Zhang Mengyuan and Zhou Qingyuan -- clinched the 10m air pistol team title. Hosts and defending champions South Korea, who were the pre-Games favourites, finished a poor fourth behind silver-medallists Taiwan and Mongolia. Medal winners are decided by combining the qualification scores of each team member, a rule that ruined South Korea's chances.
“The Tesla’s great technology, but it’s still a niche product,” said Jana Hartline, environmental communications manager for Toyota, who’s riding with me as I head north on the Embarcadero.
Toyota, the world’s largest automaker, is convinced that fuel-cell cars better suit the mass market than pure electrics such as Tesla ever will.
Toyota insists that fuel-cell vehicles can offer better range at lower prices than battery-powered electrics, although the automaker has yet to reveal the price of its fuel-cell sedan.
All that comes out is a dribble of water, the by-product of the fuel cell’s electrochemical reaction between hydrogen stored in two tanks and oxygen sucked in through a slit-like vent beneath the hood.
The production model sports a sleek body and broad, bold front highlighted by two big air scoops that feed the cooling system.
Toyota has already tested its fuel-cell technology in other cars not offered to the American public, including an SUV that has logged more than 1 million miles of travel since 2007.
Jared Farnsworth, senior engineer with Toyota’s fuel-cell program, says he’s tested the cars in weather extremes that include air temperatures down to minus 41 degrees.
California has just nine stations now (the Bay Area has one, in Emeryville) although 49 more are under development.
the most common way of producing hydrogen involves stripping it from natural gas, a process that releases the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.
After the crisis, it was hard to get a mortgage that wasn’t government guaranteed, although in the past year the market for jumbo loans that exceed the government’s dollar limits has come back to life.
Under federal rules that took effect this year, lenders generally must look at borrowers’ income and assets and make sure they have an ability to repay.
Lenders who go a step further, and make what is known as a qualified mortgage, get certain legal protections if people sue them, claiming they made an unaffordable loan.
The borrower’s debt payments, including the mortgage and other debts, can’t exceed 43 percent of monthly pretax income.
RPM’s new “tailored line of products” is designed mainly for people who have “great credit, great reserves,” but can’t get a qualified mortgage, generally because their debt exceeds 43 percent of income, says Rob Hirt, RPM chief executive.
Hirt says a “very, very large institutional investor,” a money management firm he would not identify, “sought us out and said we really believe in (non-qualified mortgages) if we can define what those loan parameters will be.”
“The rates are in the mid-4s and will reach as high as 6 percent depending on the loan program type, the borrower’s assets, equity in the home and credit score,” Hirt says.
RPM is willing to forgo the legal protections a qualified mortgage provides because “these are smart loans to qualified individuals who don’t fit in a (qualified-mortgage) box.”
The other new mortgage, called the Wealth Building Home Loan, is a 15-year mortgage designed to help low- and middle-income borrowers build equity faster than they can with a 30-year loan.
A subsidized version is being offered through NACA, a progressive nonprofit that has leaned — heavily at times — on banks to increase lending in low-income communities.
For two decades, NACA has offered 30-year loans with no down payment, points, closing costs or mortgage at competitive rates.
Cairns (Australia) (AFP) - Vladimir Putin is set to attend the G20 leaders' summit in November despite alarm over Russia's actions in Ukraine with host Australia Saturday saying it was the "emphatic" wish of member nations. There had been question marks over whether Moscow should be invited to the high-powered forum in Brisbane with the brutal five-month conflict that has killed around 3,000 people still unresolved.
