This week marked the 44th anniversary that Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 was signed into legislation. In just 37 words, Title IX provided female athletes with the right to equal opportunities in sports in educational institutions that receive federal funds. "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance." While Title IX has been credited for changing the landscape of women’s sports – the number of female college athletes exceeds 205,000, which is more than six-fold since enactment – many continue to wonder if institutions are seriously enforcing Title IX?
