By Scott Wright Staff Writer email@example.comCoyle only started playing football in 2004, and on Saturday night, the Bluejackets will compete for a state championship.
Coyle defeated powerhouse Cherokee 42-22 in a semifinal game Monday night at Enid High School to earn its first-ever trip to a football state final.
“This is a dream come true,” said coach Shane Weathers, who started the program 11 seasons ago.
After Coyle fumbled inside its own 20 early in the third quarter, the defense held on four straight downs to get the ball back.
By Jacob Unruh Staff Writer firstname.lastname@example.orgLAWTON — A 14-point deficit late in the game doesn't necessarily mean the end for McGuinness.
It was down 13 a little more than a week ago with less than two minutes remaining before orchestrating a comeback.
Trailing Altus by 14 with 1:17 left Monday night, McGuinness coach Justin Jones had the hope his team could duplicate the comeback with a quick score, onside kick and another score.
Those hopes, though, were quickly dashed.
Quarterback Jacob Mullins threw his third interception of the night, and Altus sealed a 49-35 win at Cameron Stadium to advance to the Class 5A state football championship.
“It was one of those deals I felt like at the end we should have had a couple more shots, but that was out of our control,” Jones said.
Ken Williams had 17 points and Georgi Boyanov added 15 points on a perfect night to lead South Alabama to a dominating 79-50 victory over Division II Spring Hill on Monday night.
Boyanov was flawless from the floor (4-4) and the free throw line (7-7), and also grabbed seven rebounds.
Jordan Fouse scored 22 points and dished out six assists and Green Bay used a big first-half to handle Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, 87-69 on Monday night.
Fouse scored 16 of his points in the first half as the Phoenix (4-3) built a 54-28 advantage by intermission by shooting 21 of 34 from the floor (61.8 percent).
Carrington Love added 17 points for Green Bay, hitting 4 of 7 from beyond the arc, and dished out seven assists while Charles Cooper added 15 points and grabbed eight boards.
Green Bay finished the game shooting 34 of 64 from the field (53.1 percent), including 9 of 17 from distance and scored 20 points off Edwardsville turnovers.
Grant Fiorentinos scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the Edwardsville bench.
Jordan Murphy had 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead Minnesota to an 89-83 victory over Clemson in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Monday night.
Murphy hit 9 of 16 shots and Nate Mason added 17 points with eight assists for the Golden Gophers (5-2).
Jaron Blossomgame scored 24 points and grabbed six rebounds, and Jordan Roper scored a career-high 25 for Clemson (4-2), which hit 14 of 28 3-pointers.
The Tigers led by 10 in the first half but they allowed Minnesota to shoot 52.7 percent for the game and had no answer for Murphy down the stretch.
Minnesota went 24 for 30 at the free throw line and only turned it over six times.
