A judge on Thursday cleared a mentally ill man who smoked crack cocaine to testify as a key witness in the murder trial of a Portland man accused of a 2014 shooting at a Brighton Avenue apartment. The judge in the case against 25-year-old Abdirahman Haji-Hassan also ruled, over the prosecution’s objection, to allow defense attorneys to name an alternative suspect during the trial, since the other man, Gang Deng Majok, was also in the apartment at 214 Brighton Ave.
