School shootings have become so common that it’s difficult to absorb each fresh catastrophe; on Jan. 23, the New York Times reported that the U.S. had already seen 11 in 2018. “The Burials,” now in a West Coast premiere by San Francisco Youth Theatre, helps make one of our most shameful contemporary phenomena concrete in detail and human in scale. Written by Caitlin Parrish and directed by Cliff Mayotte, the show is inspired in part by Sophocles’ “Antigone.” It follows the children of a pro-gun politician, one of whom is the shooter; the others have to go back to school, torn between their peers’ anger and grief and the exigencies of their father’s campaign.
