Bassem Youssef is a genial man who as a doctor went into the streets of Cairo during the Arab Spring and came out a world-famous comedian. The man now known as the Jon Stewart of Egypt has graced us with satirical humor that sends a loud and clear message against repression. In the entertaining yet somber documentary “Tickling Giants,” director Sara Taksler follows Youssef’s life from his becoming a comic to his running afoul of the authoritarian Egyptian government, first under President Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood and then under current President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who led the military coup that overthrew Morsi. Government pressure forced the Egyptian television stations to shut down “The Show.” Youssef, who felt in danger in Egypt, now resides in the United States, where he is making the talk-show rounds to promote his movie and book, “Revolution for Dummies.”
