Kris Kristofferson was born on 22 June 1936 in Brownsville, Texas. He served, like his father before him, in the US military, but resigned his commission in 1965 to pursue a career in music. He began as a songwriter, and in 1970 his "Sunday Morning Coming Down," as sung by Johnny Cash, won Country Song of the Year. He has been married three times, once to singer Rita Coolidge, with whom he recorded two albums. He began his film career in "The Last Movie" (1971), and went on to deliver solid performances in "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" (1974) and the Barbra Streisand remake of "A Star is Born" (1976). "Heaven's Gate" (1980), resoundingly panned by critics, marked a low point; he continued to work, and in recent years has returned to the screen in the critically-acclaimed "Lone Star" (1996) and the action blockbuster "Blade" (1998).
