Launched a New Movie Site Called MoviesWithButter.com

I just launched a new movie site with my Rotten Tomatoes buddy Binh Ngo. It’s called MoviesWithButter.com, a website that tracks upcoming movies through various stages of development by aggregating scoops from the top movie sites on the web.

It all started about a year ago when my friend Wilson forwarded an article from HaoHaoReport.com about their transition from using Pligg to Drupal’s Drigg module, both are open source code that allows any web developer to easily create a Digg/Reddit clone. Back then Drigg was the better tool because it plugs into the powerful Drupal CMS and takes advantage of its vast amount of features. I was already using Drupal for Wopular, so I thought I should test it out with a new site.

I had always wanted to create a Digg for movie gossip sites, because there are lots of them, and they come and go throughout the years. Digg used to have a movies section before their notorious redesign, and their rival Reddit also has one too. The problem with them is they tend to be populated with top 10 lists and link-bait articles. I wanted to created a fully featured movie site powered by the social voting aspect of those sites.

Originally, I thought it would only take me a couple weeks to whip something together. Set up the server; install Ubuntu, Apache, PHP, and MySQL; install Drupal and the Drigg module; do a quicky design; and it’s done! Well, it kinda happened that way. 80% of it was completed in that time, but it’s the 20% of fine-tuning and tweaking that took the rest of the year.

About a month ago, I finally felt like I had something that’s close to ready for launch. I called up my old buddy Binh Ngo, who operated Rotten Tomatoes with me at our apartment during the early days, and asked him to work on the site with me. He said yes.

There’s still lots of tweaking to be done and new features to be built, but at least it’s out there now.

My friends just launched a mobile game called "Storm the Gates"! It's available on both Android and iOS. I'm not much of a gamer, so I didn't know what to do when I started it. But my 9-year-old son turned it on and knew exactly what to do. More

Over at MoviesWithButter.com, I’ve written two articles regarding “Ip Man 3,” the film that’s holding its own in Asian territories against “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” If you’re not familiar with Asian cinema,”Ip Man” one of the most popular franchises in that area of the world. More
  • Live-Blogged The Golden Globes at MWB
Yesterday, I live-blogged The Golden Globes -- for various reasons. First, it gets traffic. Second, I might as well do something useful while watching TV. Lastly, I was looking forward to seeing Ricky Gervais host the event again. Nothing against Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, but he’s my favorite. A google search revealed that the last time I did this for this award show was More

  • Finally Upgraded Sites to Use New Hardware from Linode Cloud: SSDs, Double RAM, Faster CPUs
Around April, my VPS provider Linode announced that they’ve just finished a major $45M upgrade to their hardware and network, which means free upgrades for their existing users. The new hardware uses SSD RAID drives and faster CPUs. I hadn’t bothered because Wopular and Movies With Butter have been relatively stable. More
  • The Identical Look of Firefox and Chrome Caused Site Shutdown
In my previous article, I mention how the latest version of Firefox has a nearly identical look to Google’s Chrome web browser. When I’m working on new features for my sites, I use Firefox for testing and Chrome to see what the results look like to the users. I knew one of these days, because both browsers look the same now, I would confuse one for the other and put up untested programming code that would cause havoc on my sites. More
  • Relieving High Server Load by Blocking Search Bots
Over the years, whenever the site was slow to load up, I always went through the same routine. I checked traffic logs to see if it was due to a sudden increase in traffic. If not, I would look at the mysql slow query log to see if there were slow queries bogging up the database. More
  • Betaworks' Digg Relaunch Has One Fatal Mistake
Betaworks bought Digg, the website, for about half a million. It’s a complicated sale. Linkedin acquired the patents, and Washington Post got the talent (the engineers). The first thing Betaworks did was relaunch the site on August 1st. I noticed because their RSS feeds stopped working on Wopular. More
  • Finally, Replaced Digg with Reddit
I finally had to do it. I stuck with Digg for as long as I could. It’s the first social news site. Even after the infamous version 4, I stuck with them. A decent number of Digg's hardcore users had already jumped ship since v4. More
