One of history buffs’ favorite tales concerns an aging Buffalo Bill, a prodigious drinker. It goes something like this: Told by his doctor to limit his liquor consumption to two shots a day or the result would be calamitous, the showman agreed and told a bartender to serve each shot in a tankard.

Tattered Cover’s troubles remind us to shop at independent bookstores

The Tattered Cover declared bankruptcy in October, closing three stores and laying off at least 27 employees. While it takes steps to reorganize its debt and hopefully regain its standing as the queen of Colorado independent bookstores, remember that you can still show your love through purchases at our dear Tattered, as well as these other shops across the Front Range.

The Colorado star of Half Baked Harvest inspires loyalty — and controversy

SILVERTHORNE, Colo. — Tieghan Gerard was busy lighting pumpkin spice-scented candles when I arrived at her sunlit studio in October. After more than a year of negotiations with the representatives who guard her schedule and her image, she’d agreed to cook two recipes I’d chosen from the thousands on her immensely popular recipe site, Half Baked Harvest.
