Dustin Johnson wins U.S. Open

OAKMONT, Pa. — All the chaos and confusion couldn't stop Dustin Johnson from proving he had the head to be a U.S. Open champion.

One year after the most devastating of all his close calls in the major, Johnson endured two hours of not knowing the size of his lead while the USGA questioned whether he should be penalized one stroke for his ball moving on the fifth green.

 

SC artist Jim Harrison dies

DENMARK, S.C. – Nationally acclaimed artist Jim Harrison, 80, has died. 
The Orangeburg Times-Democrat reports Harrison was found dead in his Denmark office Saturday morning of an apparent heart attack, according to Bamberg County Coroner Billy Duncan.

 

Accident kills Harlem woman, 26

A 26-year-old Harlem woman died in a traffic accident Saturday morning in Columbia County.
Deputy Coroner Harriett Garrison said Lindsey Lowe was driving a 2016 Honda Accord at Dykes Road at Wrightsboro Road around 10:30 a.m. when she apparently lost control of her vehicle, over-corrected and struck an oncoming vehicle head-on.

 

Bjorn wins Democratic US House primary

 
COLUMBIA — Arik Bjorn has been declared the winner of the Democratic primary in South Carolina’s 2nd Con­gressional District race by 45 votes out of more than 19,000 cast.
The South Carolina Elec­tion Commission certified the results Saturday afternoon after a recount mandated by law. The district includes parts of Aiken, Barnwell, Lexington, Orangeburg and Richland counties.

 

Patterson Bridge Road reopens

Closed since an April 1 washout, Patterson Bridge Road reopened Friday ahead of schedule.
According to Augusta 311 Director Kelli Walker, the bridge and road reopened to local traffic - no 18-wheelers - late Friday, and the meadering detour on Chalk Mine road was being closed.
The bridge closure stranded hundreds of families living in the rural community off Patterson Bridge Road near Hephzibah. Residents were forced to take a nine-mile detour on a private road initially lined with heavy gravel they said was damaging their vehicles.

 

Wind damage, injuries at Mistletoe park

A severe thunderstorm and strong winds swept Mistletoe State Park Friday afternoon, toppling 50 to 60 trees, knocking over some vehicles and campers and sending at least one person to the hospital.
A 5-year-old girl was taken to the hospital with a broken arm. She was injured when a tree fell on a camper.
Pam Tucker, director of Columbia County emergency services, said others were evaluated at the scene and treated for minor scrapes. The park was closed.

 

Gator scare closes Tybee beaches

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. — Authorities have closed some beaches along the Georgia coast as a precaution after a large alligator was spotted near Savannah.

Tybee Island officials said in a statement that the gator, estimated to be 8 to 10 feet long, was spotted early Friday morning in the water off the beaches on the south end of Tybee Island.

They said all beaches were then closed from the Parker Pier to the back river.

 

Georgia Bank & Trust acquired

Georgia Bank & Trust Co., Augusta’s largest locally based bank, is being acquired by South State Corp., South Carolina’s largest bank holding company.
Columbia-based South State announced today it will acquire Georgia Bank & Trust’s parent company, Southeastern Bank Financial Corp., through a stock transaction expected to close during the first quarter of 2017.

 

Former Richmond sheriff Anderson dies

 
Former Richmond County Sheriff Bill Anderson died Friday morning, former colleagues confirmed.
Anderson was elected in 1971 to fill the term of Sheriff E.R. Atkins, who died in office, and served for five controversial years.
“I remember him as a very active law enforcement officer,” said Sid Hatfield, who retired from Richmond County Sheriff’s Office in 2013 but is now chief deputy at Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. “He’d live, eat and sleep law enforcement.”

 

Overturned truck delays traffic

An overturned dump truck is causing traffic delays in the Wrightsboro Road area of Columbia County.
The wreck was reported to Columbia County sheriff’s dispatch at 7:57 a.m. at Wrightsboro and Old Wheeler roads. Around 10 a.m., dispatch said a wrecker is still on the scene.
Few details on the wreck are available at this time, but it appears to be a single vehicle crash. No injuries have been reported.
